The plan

Day by day

Everything loops out from the hotel. No trains, no car — walking, one metro ride and one harbour boat.

🏰

Book Rosenborg now

It's the one museum of the trip, 8 minutes from the hotel, and entry works by 10-minute time slots that sell out. Grab a Friday 10am slot online — it's 140 DKK instead of 150 at the door.

Thursday 1 — Land at noon, craft the afternoon

12:45
Landing. Your driver takes you straight to Borgergade — about 25 minutes by road, bags at the hotel around 13:30. Check-in is 3pm, so leave them at reception.
13:45
Lunch at Torvehallerne, 12 min away. Street food stop #1, and a Coffee Collective on the way out.
15:00
Wool #1 — Uldstedet, Vendersgade 3, right beside the market. Closes at 5:30pm, so this is the safe slot. Sofa corner, Isager and Japanese needles.
16:00
Ceramics #1 — Studio Arhoj, Skindergade 7, 12 min further. Open till 6pm, potters and glassblowers at work behind the shop.
17:15
Check in, drop the shopping, breathe.
Dinner
Barabba, Store Kongensgade 34 — 3 minutes away. Then Ved Stranden 10 on the canal, or Balderdash for cocktails.

Friday 2 — Rosenborg, crafts, then Tivoli

Morning
Coffee and a cardamom bun, then Rosenborg at 10am (booked slot) and a walk through Kongens Have.
Midday
Smørrebrød lunch, then Ceramics #2 — Frama (Fredericiagade 57, 5 min from the hotel) and Wool #2 — Sommerfuglen (Vandkunsten 3, open till 6pm).
Afternoon
Drop the shopping at the hotel, coffee on the way back. Last call for shops — Saturday they shut at 2–3pm and Sunday they're closed.
Evening
Tivoli — Halloween season opens today, 20,000 pumpkins. Dinner at the Food Hall inside. Street food stop #2.

Saturday 3 — Nørrebro, then the harbour

Morning
Nørrebro: Assistens cemetery, then Jægersborggade — Inge Vincents for the paper-thin porcelain, Coffee Collective, the wool shop if Laura wants more.
Lunch
Broens Gadekøkken by the water — partly covered and heated. Street food stop #3.
18:00
Sauna evening. Harbour boat 991/992 from Nyhavn to Refshaleøen, then the private wood-fired tub at CopenHot — sunset is 6:40pm and the harbour goes dark and quiet around you.
20:30
Dinner back via Christianshavn: Barr for a proper dinner, or POPL / Poulette on the same street if you just want to eat well and fast.

Sunday 4 — Slow, then go

11am
Check out, leave the bags at reception.
Morning
Walk: Amalienborg, Kastellet, the waterfront, Nyhavn. Shops are shut on Sundays, so make it a walking morning.
If time
A last cardamom bun at Andersen & Maillard or Sankt Peders, and whatever you did not get round to buying.
Airport
Metro M2 from Kongens Nytorv, 14 min to the terminal.
Food & treats

Where to eat

Hands & materials

Ceramics & wool

Split over two days: one ceramics shop and one wool shop on Thursday afternoon, the second pair on Friday. Shops shut at 2–3pm on Saturday and stay closed Sunday, so nothing waits until the weekend.

🏺 Ceramics

Must see

Studio Arhoj

Skindergade 7 — 10 min walk · daily 10am–6pm

Half workshop, half shop: you watch the potters and glassblowers working while you browse. Colour-drenched pieces somewhere between Scandinavian restraint and Japan. They moved into the centre, so the old Islands Brygge address is out of date.

📍 Google Maps

Keramiker Inge Vincents

Jægersborggade 27, Nørrebro

Paper-thin translucent porcelain, thrown by hand in the back of the shop. Her pieces are used at Relæ. The Saturday morning highlight.

📍 Google Maps

Frama — St. Pauls Apotek

Fredericiagade 57 — 5 min from the hotel

An old pharmacy turned design studio: raw wood, stone, ceramics, apothecary scents. Closest to the hotel and quietly the most beautiful room on this list.

📍 Google Maps

🧶 Wool & knitting

For Laura

Sommerfuglen

Vandkunsten 3 — 12 min · Mon–Thu 10–5:30, Fri 10–6, Sat 10–2, closed Sun

The big one, and a genuine destination for knitters: Isager, CaMaRose, Sandnes, Brooklyn Tweed, Hedgehog Fibres, plus buttons, books and embroidery.

📍 Google Maps

Uldstedet

Vendersgade 3 — 12 min · Sat until 3pm, closed Sun

Smaller, warmer, with a sofa corner to sit and think. Isager, Gepard, Rowan, Wooldreamers and Japanese needles. Right beside Torvehallerne, so pair the two.

📍 Google Maps

Nicoline Garn

Fyensgade 1, Nørrebro

A neighbourhood shop with proper advice: Sandnes, Drops, Filcolana. Sits on the Saturday Nørrebro walk if Laura wants a third stop.

📍 Google Maps

Bring home what France doesn't stock

Danish and Nordic yarns that are hard or expensive to find at home: Isager, CaMaRose, Filcolana, Holst Garn, Sandnes, Rauma. Add a PetiteKnit or Önling pattern — both are Danish designers sold in these shops.

Yarn is light and squashable: it's the best souvenir-to-suitcase ratio of the trip.

Hot & cold

Sauna evening

Saturday evening, after dark. Water is around 12.5°C in early October — a short, bracing plunge, not a swim. Book the slot before you fly.

Our pick · book it

CopenHot

Refshalevej 195, Refshaleøen — private tub 995 DKK for 1 hour (up to 6 people)

Wood-fired tubs at 40°C looking straight out over the water, plus panoramic saunas. Take a 6pm slot: the sun sets at 6:40 and you watch the harbour go dark from the hot water. Shared "Hot Days" run at 1pm, 3:30pm and 6pm for around 350 DKK each; the private sauna alone is 795 DKK.

Swimwear required. Towels, heated changing room and outdoor showers provided. Getting there: harbour boat 991/992 from Nyhavn, or bus 2A — about 20–25 min from the hotel.

📍 Google Maps   🔗 Book
The alternative

Winter Island

Nordhavn, by the water — shared 150 DKK each, private sauna 1,200 DKK for 1 hour

Four floating saunas with big sea-facing windows, rocking slightly on the waves, plus changing rooms, hot showers and a small café doing drinks and pizza. Closer to town than Refshaleøen and cheaper if you take a shared slot rather than privatising.

They also run saunagus sessions — heat, scent and music, led by a sauna master, about 240 DKK. Booking closes at 10pm the day before, so reserve ahead, and check the evening slots when you do.

📍 Google Maps   🔗 Book

If you want it cheap and unpolished

Christiania Badehuset — 80–120 DKK, the plainest and most local sauna in town, inside Freetown.

La Banchina (Refshalevej 141A) — a wood-burning sauna for eight, a ladder into the harbour and a tiny natural-wine café. Private booking 950 DKK for 1h45 at the weekend, up to 8 weeks ahead; on Sundays from October they run a no-booking "Soup & Sauna" at about 120 DKK, first come first served. Same street as CopenHot, so it doubles as the after-drink.

📍 Google Maps
On foot

Walks

The royal loop — 5 to 6 km

Starts at the hotel door

Rosenborg and Kongens Have, the yellow terraces of Nyboder, the star-shaped ramparts of Kastellet, the Little Mermaid, then back down the waterfront past Amalienborg to Nyhavn. The classic, and it happens to start on your street.

📍 Route

Christianshavn & the canals — 4 to 5 km

Over the Inderhavnsbroen

Dutch-looking canals and houseboats, the spiral spire of Vor Frelsers Kirke if you fancy the climb, then Freetown Christiania. Ends conveniently at Broens for lunch.

📍 Route

Nørrebro craft walk — 4 km

Saturday morning

Assistens cemetery (Hans Christian Andersen is buried here, and locals treat it as a park), then the length of Jægersborggade: ceramics, coffee, natural wine, small bakeries. Ceramics and wool in one street.

📍 Route
The visit

Rosenborg Castle

Eight minutes from the hotel, at the far end of the King's Garden.

Book a time slot

Rosenborg Castle

Øster Voldgade 4A — 8 min walk · 140 DKK online, 150 at the door · around 10am–5pm

Christian IV's Renaissance summer palace: red brick, copper turrets, set in the middle of Kongens Have. Two dozen rooms over three floors — the Winter Room with its tiny writing closet, the Long Hall with its silver lions and tapestries, a whole room lined floor to ceiling with glassware. The crown jewels sit in the basement treasury.

Tickets come with 10-minute entry slots that do sell out, so book online (it's cheaper too). Allow 1½–2 hours, then walk it off in the garden. Big bags go in lockers.

📍 Google Maps   🎟️ Tickets

A glass somewhere

Wine & late drinks

Copenhagen is one of the world capitals of natural wine. Staff everywhere will pour you through a flight by the glass if you tell them what you like — no tasting menu required.

Start here

Ved Stranden 10

Ved Stranden 10 — 11 min walk, on the canal facing Christiansborg

An institution since 2009: natural and biodynamic, a dozen wines by the glass, staff who actually teach you something. Canal-side tables and a warren of little rooms behind.

📍 Google Maps

Den Vandrette

Havnegade 53A — 13 min walk, on the water

The bar of importer Rosforth & Rosforth, right on the harbour. Low-key, a small menu of things on toast, and bottles you won't see elsewhere.

📍 Google Maps

Pompette

Møllegade 3, Nørrebro

Probably the widest natural selection in the city, at friendly prices, with a Parisian bistro feel. Cheese and charcuterie to go with it. Poulette next door does spicy fried chicken.

📍 Google Maps

Admiralgade 26

Admiralgade 26 — 10 min walk

Same team as Ved Stranden 10, with a cellar of some four thousand bottles and proper food. The one to pick if you want the wine bar to be the dinner.

Balderdash

Valkendorfsgade 11 — 10 min walk

The serious cocktail bar of the centre, for a nightcap when the wine bars have shut or when Laura fancies something else.

It will rain

Rain plan B

Roughly fifteen rainy days a month in October. None of this needs good weather.

Faraos Cigarer

Skindergade 27 — 10 min walk
